Two Killeen ISD students and an elementary teacher were recently recognized by VFW District 14 Chairman Kevin William for their achievements in programs that promote patriotism, civic responsibility, and engagement with American history.
High school students across the district participated in the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program, which invites students to share their perspectives on patriotic and democratic themes through recorded essays. This year’s theme was “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?” Precious Mayag from Ellison High School earned first place.

Middle school students took part in the Patriot’s Pen essay program, which encourages young writers to explore America’s history and connect those lessons to their lived experiences.

This year’s theme was also “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?” Ko’Ree Fenwick from Live Oak Ridge Middle School received first place.

Timber Ridge Elementary teacher Corey Cooks was honored with the VFW Post 9191’s 2025–2026 Smart/Maher National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. This award recognizes educators who demonstrate outstanding efforts in promoting civic responsibility, patriotism, and understanding of American traditions.
The award recipients will be formally recognized at a Christmas dinner on Dec. 21 at the Benjamin Davis VFW Post 9191.
